The opposite of love is not hate, it is fear. The hatred, anger, greed, jealousy that we witness or experience in ourselves are expressions of fear. And, in fact, these expressions really come from the perceived lack of love, as darkness is a lack of light.
In the Gospel of John, in Christian scripture is a passage that suggests that behind everything is a concept called logos, a Greek word, difficult to translate in English. The writer theorizes that life came about through this logos, and it calls this life the light of all people. It then, says that this light shines in the darkness, and the darkness didnot overcome it.
So it is with love. When it is expressed, fear, hatred, greed cannot overcome it. During the holiday season there seem to be more demonstrations of love. People giving to those in need, watching children and becoming a little more childlike themselves, or people just being a little more patient and caring toward others.
I love Christmas songs. One of them says, "we need a little Christmas right this very minute." And another suggests the world would be different if we had that Christmas feeling all year. Both are true, no matter how "hokie" some might thing the sentiment is. And the "feeling" of Christmas is love. Yes, it is as simple and as complex as that.
If you think there is too much hatred, greed, fear showing up. Change it. Offer love.
